Hi Alar!
Thank You it is very helpful. Thank You once again. Coll |
Oracle Installer
I saw this thread on Oracle.
I am having trouble starting the Oracle installer. I get the following error: runInstaller.sh: line 4: ./runInstaller: cannot execute binary file There was a time when I could get the installer to load and take me part way through the install and then hang. |
Who are you logged in as?
Did you check the permissions on the file? |
Oracle Install
I am logged in as root when I am attempting to run the installer

Hate to tell you but Oracle doesn't install like that.
You can't just run a package and have well for one thing a successful installation, let alone a functioning database. There are environment variables to be set. Patches to be downloaded and applied. Documentation to be read ! ;) The quickest I ever heard was one hour. With good documentation for a Newbie I'd say at least 4 hours. Are you still up to it? For notes: and yes it was a successful install of Oracle 8.1.7 on RedHat 9. All of the steps are outlined here including fixing the links, Net 8 configuration, Oracle Database Configuration Assistant and Web Server. http://www3.sympatico.ca/arothmel/oracle/817.html Have Fun, alar |
Oracle install
Thanks Alar,
I have been through the configuration process. I have set the environment variables, swap space, oracle home, etc. My problem is launching the installer. When I attempt to run from the command line I get the error mentioned in my previous post. |
3. Running the installer
Oracle installer must be run from Xwindows by user oracle. Start Xwindows and from terminal window mount Oracle 8i CD-ROM and start the installer: $ /mnt/cdrom/runInstaller or if you have downloaded linux81701.tar from Oracle, untar it somewhere (e.g. under /u01/817InstallFiles), and then run the installer: [oracle@frodo 817InstallFiles]$ tar -xvf linux81701.tar [oracle@frodo Disk1]$ ./runInstaller Now installer should work and you can install the software. If there is a problem launching installer first check LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5. Assuming you have ceated user oracle as outlined in the previous step. :) |
