I'm looking to get the most out of my video playback: I can just barely manage SOME 720p right now and I'm wondering what steps I can take to make video smoother.
What can tell you: I am having trouble with the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-290.10 so I'm back to using NVIDIA Driver Version 195.36.31.
I've always used the latest non free from NVIDIA by DLing it , running /etc/init.d/gdm stop and running the NVIDIA... .run, but now even when it seems to install, after I reboot, X fails. There's likely a way for me to get the current driver working, but there also must be ways I can optimize my system for video playback.
My laptop's card is "G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300" in a Dell Latitude with an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5500 and has 4 GiB of RAM. Running Crunchbang w/xfce (debian squeeze) and I use the liquorix kernel (2.6.36-2.dmz.5-liquorix-amd64).
I don't think my card supports vdpau
I've heard mplayer plays hd better than VLC and from what I've seen, so long as I use mplayer from cli, it DOES seem to handle video better (but the audio tends to be quite out of sync).
I've HEARD that compiling mplayer myself is better that just grabbing it but I'm not sure. I can compile when it's straight forward but I suspect to compile mplayer for my purposes I'd wanna do more than basic config, make, make-install.
So: What steps can I take to get the most out of my video capabilities with this system -want to be able to get 720p to run as smoothly as possible.
Thanks for any help.
