Opinion: KDE or Red Hat 9?
 

Alright, just some opinion questions for those with Red Hat 9.

As of 2 AM this morning I have been running Red Hat 9 as my primary OS. No turning back now, I formatted my XP disk (my other one craped out on ) and installed right over it.

I choose to be a little crazy and clicked the everything button when it came time to choose packages.

Install went smoothly and everything works great. Hell works and looks better than 7.3 and I was really really impressed with 7.3. Anyways, there is something that has been bothering me since my install, KDE. It just doesn't feel like KDE. I know this sounds odd, but I liked KDE from the first time I saw it 4 years ago when I started working with Linux. on 7.3 KDE was KDE now, it feels like Red Hat KDE. I mean my Icons next to the start menu, all have default RedHat apps on them not KDE ones.

Now then that is to say that it is not without its positives. I like the new menu when X starts that allows me to choose, and I did find that I can customize KDE to look like the one I see at KDE.org.

Now my question to YOU is this, which do you prefer?

KDE or Redhat?
Koffice or Open Office?
Konquer or Mozilla?
KMail or Evolution Mail?

Like I said this is kinda a wierd post, but I am just curious about what other nix users think.

Well even though I'm still pretty new to RedHat and Linux in general in terms of UIs, I prefer the KDE look right now. It just makes Linux seem a little friendlier while at the same time keeping a serious look that I can use as a working enviornment. Can't comment on the office packages or email clients yet as I haven't used them enough yet. As for web browsers, right now I'd have to go with Mozilla still for the tabs that it has. That and it seems more responsive than Konqueror. Both of them are still very good browsers though and I could realistically use either.

Your KDE is still the same but given a Redhat Theme called Bluecurve.
You can go to your control panel and change your theme to classic.
It will look just like your old version of KDE.

Yea, I am only now starting to look at a lot fo office programs, Open Office is definatly nice. It seems to me what Red Hat did was take Gnome and KDE put them to together, and then binded them with a common set-up, while keeping most of their own unique features.

It feels like I am running a version of KDE designed for Red Hat, and not just the standard KDE. Kinda like...uhh a uhh Red Hat KDE.

I do miss some of the original features of KDE like the mini-browser, and the pinning option.

Redhat or KDE? well, One is a distribution the other a desktop environment so i would have to say Gentoo with fluxbox or Redhat with Gnome.;)

Koffice or Openoffice? they are both pretty bloated programs that kinda take forever to load....I definitely go with abiword, magicpoint, and gnumeric (compiled from source:D )

Konqueror or Mozilla? I would choose Lynx, mozilla firebird, or epiphany. they are sooooo fast and stripped down. only the bare browsing essentials.

Kmail or Evolution mail? Pine or balsa. I'm to impatient to wait for slow loading programs.

Sorry if i seem to offend anyone but i DESPISE kde. it's so slow!! it's like using windows in linux! i'm not dogging anyone in here for what they like, but hey you asked for my opinion and preferences so i gave them to ya fresh outta the box. :D :cool:

Hey I did ask for an opinion, as long as the topic doesn't become "flamed" it is a perfectly valid post in my humble opinion.

nah, i only flame windows. people who use linux earn my respect because they put the effort forward to learn something new. i was merely stating my preferences and opinions of KDE because i am impatient user. i know some people that reallly like KDE and are really productive with it..but i hate it for my own reasons that shouldn't discourage others from using it. opensource is a way of life for the geeks and preferences define the individual. my preference is fluxbox because it is really fast. but kde and gnome are both waaay better than any version of windows:rolleyes:

I actually toured Gnome when I was using root to set up my webserver, and I must say, I was more impressed with it a second time around than I was a first. Where can I find this Lynx, mozilla firebird, or epiphany? just punch in a search at google?

well, lynx usually comes standard with redhat 9 so you should be able to get it off of the redhat cd. it is a text based webbrowser if your into those (some people aren't):cool:

mozilla firebird is located on www.mozilla.org. i think you have to tar xf it and then compile it, but once you get it working, it's a dream. or maybe you just have to make a launcher to it and run sh to get it too work...can't remember... epiphany is the new web browser for gnome 2.4. in order to get that to work you have to have mozilla compiled with gtk+2.0. then you can compile epiphany to work. as far as where to get epiphany, i think you can get it off sourceforge.net but to tell ya the truth i can't remember exactly where to get it. epiphany is probably the fastest gui browser for gnome in my opinion but firebird takes a close second.

however, if you like the look and feel of redhat, the fedora core was released recently and comes with gnome 2.4, kernel 2.4.22, epiphany, and a bunch of updated packages. i'd definitely recommend updating to fedora over removing and recompiling mozilla. unless if your hardcore and want the punishment:)

I dont wish to go through punishment. BTW and how is Fedora Core? I am not exactly a programmer I am just trying to learn about another OS other than windows. But I need something that is pretty stable, especially since this is my only computer. But if it ain't a complete bitch to work with, I wouldn't mind upgrading to that.

The only problem is, I have a GeForce FX 5200...and well it wasn't well liked by RH9 I had to put in an old 2 meg video card I had to get this one to work.
