this was a question about installing opera skins, but as I have just installed the "rc?" version of opera 7 for linux, it doesn't matter as opera 6 skins aren't compatible and I can't find any for linux opera 7 (not sure whether the version 7 for wind0w$ ones would work so ???!!"F*++%

Ok, so after all that, I have had to delete the opera version 7 browser and re-install the current stable opera 6.12 version so it's back to the original question of

when I download a "skin", to my home directory, I click on it to open or whatever and I get an "ARK" dialogue window that tells me that it's a ZIP file and .ZIP isn't in my path?

so what does this mean and how do I put .ZIP in my path?

Good question. Open up a terminal and type: unzip -h

If something pops up other than an error message (some help file telling you how to use unzip/zip) then it's probably already there. What do the files extensions look like? Or one better, open up a terminal, cd into the directory with the skins in it, and type:
file skin.whatever
so if the file is called pepperskin.zip then type:
file pepperskin.zip

And post up what that returns.

Cool

Well Chad,

I suppose that I am still suffering from too much wind0w$ crap in my head.

I tried your first suggestion of unzip -h and a large and rather incomprehensible help file opened.

so then I try the file <whatever the file was called> command and it just said that it couldn't "stat" the filename.

so like the impatient twit that I am, I reread your post and thought I'd better see if I have got something for zip/unzip installed, and bingo (or ognib as they say in backwards land - here) so I have installed it and when I clicked on the package it opened etc.

I tried to follow the common sense route and apply the fore/background skinning in preferences, but nothing happened. But when I tried and located the button set, it comes up with a "button set includes skins, would you like to use them" dialogue and of course yes.

What I don't quite understand, is that while I appreciate that although windows tends to scatter files allover the place on the harddrive, when I look at an app or directory, the files all show as being in the same place, whereas with the linux(or is it just mandrake), there seems to be bits of debris from file downloads, unpacking etc etc all over the place.

So in this case, should I move the unpacked directory to the ".opera" directory so it isn't in a stupid place (my home directory) and then delete the remaining copy of the packed up skin/button set?

When you typed "file filename" you do have to be in the directory that the file exists in, the response "cannot stat filename" usually means that for one reason or another file cannot find the filename specified (maybe a typo even). Since you managed to unzip it and it's working now though, that's 'old news' and who cares for now :)

So, then you want a place to move the skins directory to, well you can either move it to .opera OR you could create a directory within /home so every user (assuming you have recruited Clare (that is your wife's name right?) to be a linux user :D ) on the system can have a chance to use that as their skin. So maybe:
mkdir -p /home/skins/opera

Which will create the directory /home/skins/opera which you can then move the skin to, re-locate it within the opera setup, and drink and be merry :)

Just an idea, however if you want to use .opera I don't think it'll be a problem either.

Cool

Thanks Chad,

I'll move it the .opera then so I then know where to put any others and delete the original downloaded package.

As for getting Clare to use linux - fat chance. She is a typical kindergarten teacher - she knows what and how to do things but only her way - she stresses me out when she gets a slightly different log off dialogue ( as in the difference between the dialogues that you get when either using the k menu log off or the right click log off menu - but she hasn't quite mastered the shut down and reboot to xp option in the log in users dialogue!)

In fact, I got shit the other week after installing a new hard disc (the 120gig western digital 7200rpm 8meg buffer model). Why? well because I couldn't remember the exact settings for Orifice 2000 and created a shortcut, whereas she had been used to selecting "new orifice document" from the start menu - phew! the things we do for love eh?

p.s. just for info, I was confused as to why I couldn't "stat" the file name, because the downloaded package was in my home directory and I am presuming that when I open a "Konsole", I am already in my home directory (and I checked for typo's but couldn't see one) - still who cares, I managed to sort it after your prompting.

but the Opera community site has 60 different skins which auto install by clicking on them on version 7

i'm using it now

bigjohn 04-11-2003 05:29 PM

Would that be version 7 for wind0w$ though?

Because I certainly can't find any autoinstaller for 6.12 linux version that I use under mandrake 9.0

but I will go back and have a look, because yes the autoinstall for wind0w$ is very good

John

<edit> nope, having just popped over to the "my opera" community site, the skins for linux definitely only auto install for wind0w$ - if you look, when you down load one, even linux specific are retained as ZIP files - I suppose that's so they don't have to produce differing versions of each one i.e. rpm, src rpm, .tar, .tgz, debian, etc etc. Then it just depends on which version of opera you run and the app that you use for unzipping etc.<edit/>

version 7 for windows AND linux both have access to the same skins
i have the same skins installed on both the windows version and the linux version

MasterC 04-12-2003 04:24 AM

How do you do it though... Instead of "Yes you can" how about "This is how you can..."

Anyway, John, from this page:
http://my.opera.com/customize/skins/faq/

It says:
Quote:

How can I make Opera 7 skins download and install automatically on my own website?

You need to set the MIME type to "x-opera-skin".
Cool

salparadise 04-12-2003 05:35 AM

humble apologies
i just went to the Opera Community page, clicked on the Skins link and browsed the skins
i clicked on "download this skin" on the ones i liked and they self installed
i now have a list of skins in the "View/Skin" menu

I am editing this post to remove all traces of sarcasm (though in truth, some should remain).

The reason for the initial sarcastic (driven by frustration and a bottle of red table wine called "the dog's bollocks" yum yum!) was because it took me a while to realise what salparadise had done (or not in this case!).

The not bit, was not reading the entire thread properly - I did point out that because the original version of 7.10 that I had downloaded was not working properly (the one shown the other day before "they" release the Beta 1 version).

But, when the "penny finally dropped" I realised that salparadise had probably already downloaded the beta 1, and yes I now understand why he(she?) was driven to point out the obvious that the beta 1 linux does indeed work the same as the version 7 for wind0w$.

Hence this edit and the rather small piece of "humble pie" that I am currently consuming!

and (hopefully) no hard feelings, for the earlier "inappropriate" reply.

p.s. though I don't quite understand why when I checked the version 7 skins as root, I got 132, and when I moved back into my home account to reconfigure I only got 60 and yes there is still a considerable amount of replication of skin styles - though I thought that "khrome" was quite original.
