OpenSuse 11.2 upgrade - NO SOUND!

I have just upgraded to OpenSuse 11.2 and all went well except that I have no sound again! I had the same problem with 11.1 but solved it clicking the device selections in Control Panel/Sound. That option seems to have disappeared now - no mention of ALSA or OSS which was there with 11.1.. I get sound when I do speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav (with a good deal of clicking between the speech) but cannot find how to get the system sound working.

I have a USB audio system which is shown as the main sound card in Yast/Hardware/Sound. The other is AC'97 Sound Controller.

All the help I can find relates to 11.1. Is there anyone who has met this problem in 11.2? Help would be most gratefully received. Life is dull without sound!

Apologies for the length of my previous post. I included it all in case the essential facts were omitted.

In fact, I have now got some sound working. Banshee is playing audio CDs OK and I can get sound on BBC iplayer.

Also, when I go to Sound Preferences/Sound Effects all the sample sounds work and I get sound when I click on the volume sliders. But no sound is coming through from the system yet.

I have a hunch the problem is in Sound Preferences settings, but endless experimenting has not solved it. The current settings are:

Internal Audio profile: Digital Surround 4.0 (IEC958) Output + Analog Stereo Input
USB Audio System Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Digital Stereo (IEC958) Input.

I could list all the input/output device settings but I'm not sure that would help. My problem is that I do not know how to get input from the system itself.

Any ideas please as to how to tackle this problem?

Many thanks

Hi,

Have you tried playing different wav files?
Code:
aplay -vv *.wav
What is your Desktop environment? There is a bug with KDE4

I put in that command and got "*.wav no such file or directory."

However, I tried playing .wav files on the wav-sounds.com website. Some worked but others only loaded partly then dropped.

I am now getting a clunk when a new e-mail arrives, if that helps! But no window or button or start-up sounds.

Many thanks for your interest ursusca.

Hi,

When I said *.wav I ment any wav files.
Code:
aplay -vv <any_wav_file>.wav
For example you can find it in the /usr/share/sounds dierctory.
Do you have a pulseaudio-esound-compat package?
Did you check the Sound Preferences?

Click Computer > Control Center > System > Sound to open the Sound Preferences tool.

The Sound Preferences tool lets you control when the sound server starts. You can also specify which sounds to play when particular events occur.

I do have Pulse Audio but what is a pulseaudio-esound-compat package?

.wav files play in Banshee when I double click them. It's just that system sounds like start up, log off, buttons and windows don't play in normal use. There must be a settings failure somewhere but I just can't find it. Have tried endlessly in Sound Preferences but just can't hit the magic connection for some reason.

Perhaps I just have to live with it?

Hi,

This package provides the compatibility layer for drop-in replacement
of ESOUND.

Did you check Sound Theme?

Pulse Audio Devices

I'm now getting a message on startup which says something like "Avahi Zeroconf not running. PLease install and activate before opening Pulse Audio Devices"

I have been to the Avahi website but cannot find how to get/install this application.

Theme is checked Default.

Hi,

Check out your services in Yast -> System -> Services/RunLevel. I can't remember exactly the specific service name, but you're going to want to look for a service related to zeroconf.

I have 2 Zeroconf 'daemons', which claim to be running at levels 0,3,5. They are avahi-daemon and avahi-dnsconfd. But I'm still getting 'Zeroconf not running' at startup. Should I try reinstalling these or somethinglike that? If I try to restart them I get an error message: /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start returned 1 (unspecified error):
