I downloaded openSUSE-10.3-GM-KDE-i386.iso from the openSUSE website. Made a bootable CDRW with k3b in a previously installed openSUSE 10.1(with dual boot) which i got off a LINUX FORMAT magazine.
As I try to install 10.3 the green screen with installation options comes up, choosing installation loads the kernel and the screen goes blank with the following error message (checked in text mode) being displayed
Uncompressing Linux
invalid compressed format (err=1)
--System halted
No combination of keys will bring the system out of this stated and a reset is required.
I am suspecting my bootable CD is the cause, but then the kernel is loading from the CD. all compressed files on the CD are being opened by the archivers in both Windows and Linux 10.1 giving no errors of any kind.
Could anyone tell me the reason for the above error and the solution or workaround and have I copied the CD correctly.
And... if you even get that far - usually install cd's let you check the cd before continuing the installation, so you know if it burned correctly.
If it all fails, I would burn it a second time at the slowest possible speed, and if it still doesn't work, shake your fists to the sky and use the name of your lord in vain.... or try another distribution.
I bought my copy of suse 10.3 at ebay. It will work and you are only out of pocket 6 bucks. I wont install it because I'm afraid it will wipe out XP. Suse installation problems are hard get answers to. Think I'm gonna try Debian next.
