Opening Firefox via terminal vs kmenu

I have just installed Kubuntu Gutsy. I have copied userchrome from backup to the new FF profile. It has two purposes 1) icons only (no text) in Bookmarks Toolbar (BT), 2) multi-row display in BT. When I start FF by kmenu, neither is invoked. When I start in terminal, both work perfectly, as they did in previous install (Feisty). I am told it is dangerous (and also inconvenient) to open FF with "sudo firefox". Anyone have any idea what is happening and how to correct it? Thanks.

did you do the change to userchrome in the home directory (/home/user) or system wide ? I think since sudo works post likely it is a permissions problem

try
$ ls -l
for all the files that you copied/modified. it should be readable/writable.

You can try
$ firefox

and see what is the error message.

If you use sudo firefox you might endanger the stability of the system and it is not good.

Thank you so much for that. It was indeed a permissions problem.
