Open Ofice will not launch

Compaq Presario 2100 1.4 gh.

I bought Point & Click with Simply Mepis C.D.

When I boot from the CD

Open office refuses to open.

It sounds as if much data is being loaded from the CD but no program comes on screen.

I tried this on my older desk top with the same results.

Hmmm..interesting. You may not have enough RAM to run Open Office, and considering the fact that you're running it off the CD, you may not be able to open it. Have you considered installing MEPIS to your hard drive? Then you'd be able to make proper changes, and Open Office should open with ease, because it would be running off a hard drive (much faster and much less memory-consuming than off a CD).

Have you got a swap partition availabe for Linux. The lack of any swap space will severly restrict what will run on your system.

Michael: I don't think he does as he did mention he was running MEPIS off a live CD, and you usually only have a swap partition if you already have Linux installed on your computer.

Thanks for your responses.
I have 500 megs of ram, hope that is enough.
Yes I am considering installing on my hard drive but I wanted to see if it works first.

I will need a driver for my Oki C5150 color laser printer.
I will need a driver for my air card which works over the cell network to give me Internet access away from home.
In other works I don't want to be dead in the water because I install simply mepis.

A dual boot may be the answer, but the back ups and the messing around finding drivers may have to wait till the summer and fall projects get done. This may have been a bad idea at this time.

I guess that is part of the unhappy hold that windows has on us. With windows you just do it and it is done, and reboot when the thing crashed and keep on trucking.

I just read some comments on the Point & Click site.

somebody had the problem of open office not opening.

There is an answer from Roblimo himself suggesting that the customer could/should ask for a replacement CD.

no mention whether that worked or not but I'll try it.

I tried down loading the CD but the file is too big to fit a 700 mb. CD.

You can download the .iso from the lqiso.org MEPIS directory. Try that one out - if OO.org doesn't work on it then it may possibly be an incompatibility with your computer, or downloading it off one of the MEPIS-recognised iso mirrors: like this one. Download the file SimplyMEPIS-3.3.1-1.iso, and once you have it, open up the iso in either Nero (on Linux or Windows), or K3B (I prefer this one), to write the image to the CD. It will fit onto a CD-R, but you have to remember to burn the image, rather than just dragging the image onto the CD-R (just in case you didn't know ).

Still confused about burning iso files? Then, look no further - LQ's own "Burning an iso" guide!

P.S 500 MBs of RAM is more than enough!
