Open Connections, do I need them?

I notice I have a few connections that seem to be running ever since I've installed my slackware 11.

1. SMTP
2. submission
3. time

Do I need them; if not, how can I disable them permanently till I really need them.

what is the submission and what is it purpose?

The time service keeps your computer clock accurate (the built-in PC clocks drift over time). SMTP sends emails from automated processes as well as users (reports, alerts) etc. It's a good idea to run these on every server.

I don't use Slackware, so I don't know what the "submission" service is.
