Open Access packages for CentOS6.6

Hi All,

I need an open source RDBMS (Sybase-type) and an engineering package (MatLab-type) for my Linux box that's running CentOS 6.6. I've done some checking at it appears MySQL and GNU Octave might fit my needs. Has anybody tried similar packages with my version of Linux and if so, which ones worked best?

Thanks in advance.

mysql is no longer in development
Oracle bought it to kill it off

there is a REPLACEMENT called "MariaDB"

and octave runs very nice
BUT!!!!!!

you might need to use a custom build
octave uses Imagemagick and it NEEDS!!! a 32 bit floating point version for working on images
most software repos install a 16 bit imagemagick
-- a BIG problem if you are using 32 bit floatingpoint photos

so i make a custom Q32 imagemagick and build the octave source against that version of imagemagick

John VV,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I've heard that SQLite may also fit my needs for an open-access, single-user RDBMS but it's good to know that MariaDB could be another option.

As for Octave, I'm primarily interested in some rather large array manipulations rather than image processing. I hope to find an open access application that can run MatLab *.m files without little or no modifications. (I bought MatLab once only to have the license revoked two years later when my university obtained a cite license so I've got a really bad taste in my mouth for Mathworks. I still cannot believe they pulled my single-user Linux license even though I had even been paying the annual maintenance fees!)

Octave will run most m files
for video processing - buy $$$ matlab

but 95% of things done in matlab can be ran in octave without a problem

there is also a GUI of sorts for octave
QT-Octave , depending on your Operating system this may or may not build

and is not really needed

if you have a nvidia 3d card CUDA is usable or OpenCL
