I'm setting up (have set up) Ubuntu after installing W7, everything working great - then realized that I have made the W7 partition too small. Nothing new installed yet, is it possible now to resize/enlarge that partition, without reinstalling ??? Thanks

You could use gparted for that.

If on windows then partition magic will do this - you'll have to get your hands on a full version I think though.

Gparted, do I unmount,shrink then expand the W7 partition

Please post the layout of your HDD as reported by Gparted or cfdisk, so that we can give you an advise.

Running in Linux (Ubuntu), please do "sudo fdisk -l" in a terminal. Post the results here.

You may need to move your Linux partitions so that you can expand the Windows partition.

The Linux partition to shrink is a (simple-basic-non NTFS-Primary) @ 219.53 gib, my W7 partition is a NTFS @ 11.78 gib.

Is that all ?

It would be better to post the whole partition table as the output of "sudo fdisk -l device_name" or "cfdisk -P s device_name", where e.g. device_name can be /dev/hda or /dev/sda/.

Hopefully you have a Ubuntu liveCD that you probably used to install Ubuntu.

Resizing partitions is best done while booted in the liveCD, not booted in the installed copy of Ubuntu.

Once booted in the liveCD, it should be pretty easy to run gparted and use it to shrink the Linux partition (probably moving it as well) then expand the Windows partition.

I mainly use Mepis, which is very similar to Ubuntu.

gparted from the Mepis liveCD is very slow at surprising points where gparted normally is OK.

For occasional use, I find it easier to be patient than to figure it out.

If you run into the same issue, try being patient. Don't assume it is broken if a step that ought to take a second takes a minute.

The big operation may take much more than a minute. But I haven't noticed the big operations in gparted taking longer when booted from CD than from disk (for such big operations as are possible at all when booted from disk).

Ok starting from sq 1, with a little more care, just another learning experience - eh
