Only Putty works with port 22

I'm running Ubuntu Server 12.04 inside a virtual machine and using Windows 7 as my main OS. I'm able to run commands through Putty, but when I try
Code:
ssh charlie-think@I.P
the connection times out. If I try
Code:
ssh charlie-think
or
Code:
ssh -L 5900:I.P:5900 charlie-think
then I get the message "Connection refused". I've got no idea what's wrong, and so any help would be really appreciated.

Edit: After starting a new vncserver session, and the codes I entered now give the "Connection refused" error.

are you trying to ssh from the windows main to the linux virtual?

Which vncserver are you using?
"vncserver" doesn't support connecting to desktop 0 port 5900. has to be greater (5901-590#)
"x11vnc" however, does support connecting to 5900 if that is what you need.

Code:
# This means connect as user charlie-think @ machine with IP=ip_addr
ssh charlie-think@I.P

# this means connect to machine named charlie-think
ssh charlie-think
not the same cmd at all

If you can't connect, how are you running commands via ssh using putty?

Also it might help if we knew how your virtual networking is setup. Are you bridged? Host Only? NAT?
