only audio but no video when playing .mpeg files with MPlayer-0.90

Hi ,

I am using Red Hat 10 on my PC

I got the movie player for linux "MPlayer-0.90.tar.bz2" file

I decompressed the file and installed it using the following commands
./configure
make
make install

It was installed successfully But the problem is that Whenever i try to play .mpeg files or any video files it does not show any video but only audio is heard.

I used the command

mplayer song.mpeg
to play the mpeg file at the bash shell with the X server running .

I even tried it after stopping the X server but again only audio is heard and there is no video

I've encountered problems like that (not OS specific or play specific), When I don't have the appropriate codecs installed, or they have become corrupt. Or it is possible that your sound isnt configured properly in mplayer? I've never used redhat, so i'm not sure what to do with it specificly. But in KDE i've had a problem where i've had to disable aRts sound server in order to get sound to play from certain programs. Didn't like aRts anyway, made everything fuzzy. Can find aRts in the KDE config center, under Sound, then sound server (i think is what its called). Hope that helps at all. Good Luck.

do a vim ~/.mplayer/config and add "ao" option
#sound configuration(maybe i use oss)
ao=oss
