On-board sound not working

Hi,

I'm running Mandrake 9.1. I got it set up on a dual boot with XP. My motherboard has on-board sound. It works in MS Windows. In my newbish perception, by "not working" I mean that I'm double-clicking on mp3's in my windows folders and a program called "Kaboodle" pops up and counts off seconds as if it were playing my mp3.

Please, I'm a complete newb. If you tell me to do something, dumb it down to kindergarten level. I just figured out what a console was today.

I'm looking in the control panel at all my hardware and it shows my sound card and describes it as a VT8233[AC97 Audio Controller].

Thanks

try to run this

sndconfig

Hey David,
I appreciate the help, but what do you mean? I tried entering "sndconfig" in the console and it didn't recognize the command. I entered it in the "Run Command" off the "Start" button, and it didn't recognize it there either.

Thanks

It must not be installed if you tried it as root

if you tried with a normal user it might not have been in the path, you also need root priviledges to run it because it creates the needed /dev files for sound to work

If it's not installed you can get it from here...

or maybe from your cds

David, you were right, sndconfig was not installed. But I jumped the gun. As it turn's out, there is a little program called aumix, that had my soundcard muted. I turned the volume up on it and I had sound. Boy do I feel dumb. Jimi Hedrix, "All Along the Watchtower" was my first song in Linux.

Occam's Razor paraphrased by my favorite Calculus Professor, "The simplest solition is usually correct." I should have listened.

Thanks for the help!
