Can anyone tell me how to install AfterStep or Window Maker and then tell me how to get to one of those window managers. I'm running RH 9.

Why not starting on their official sites like afterstep they have a FAQ covering alot of questions, including installing: ftp://ftp.afterstep.org/docs/afterstep-faq.txt

I'm sure Window Maker has the same type of documentation either in the files you download or on their site.

Most packages come with a README or INSTALL file that tells you step by step to install.

And the manager, those usually come with the distro, you can choose between KDM, GDM or XDM.... and so on..

everything is there is sf.net. if not just search google for whatever you want. the website also will contain detailed installation instructions. follow it and you should be able to get everything up. if you have specific problems post back again

Guys, I checked their respective websites and the links to their docs are sparse and some just don't work. yes I did google and so far everthing I've found is explained as if I know what I'm doing. Every where I turn all is explained like that. The readmes in there package is useless to a newbie. I've been a windows user since 1996 and I used to run Litestep on my windows machine so I know a little about computers but I sure ain't know expert. Last time I checked this board you are reading this post on is for Newbies. Hmm.

ok.. let me try to guide you. you want to run afterstep in linux bcoz u are used to running litestep in windows. ok that makes sense to me.

from the above link you can install afterstep. if you have already installed apt. apt-get install afterstep will do it for you,

after restart x by pressing ctrl alt and backspace. check if you have afterstep in the session list. if not you might have to add it manually. that depends on whether you are using the gnome display manager or some other thing. the default one with redhat 9 is gnome display manager. you can use the gdm help to figure out how to do it.


if you like build from souce

go to afterstep.org and download the it.. the third icon in the list. and follow the readme. i guess you wouldnt like this option


i havent installed afterstep myself. so if you have any specific problems post back and i will try to help you

It is a site for newbies, as for advanced users but you should also consider everyone here is helping out in their own spare time. Most should consider that members shouldn't have to write novels or complete howto's for members asking questions. Especially when there is documentation to get you started or going in what your trying to accomplish. Then if you find something specific or something you don't understand, or run into a problem, then ask away. But consider that some questions that are very vague and non-specific that you could write a book covering, are most likely going to get redirected to a site that already has this information available.

Just a thought and something to keep in mind when posting questions.
