Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Did you not read post #4? Open a new thread for new questions..you have FOUR separate questions in this one, and didn't even acknowledge you got help with your first question.
And have you tried Google for ANY of this??
A .tgz file is a TAR/GZIP...typing in "tar xvrz <filename>" will uncompress it. How you install it depends on what it IS. Read the instructions for whatever software you downloaded, either from the website or in the instructions that come WITH the software.
You scan using SANE software, or from various options in other graphics programs. What have you done/tried, how is the device connected, what error(s) did you get, and what version/distro of Linux are you using?
Please re-read the LQ rules you agreed to when you signed up, and read the threads on how to ask smart questions.
