odd sound problems

I've been using SuSe for the last couple of weeks, but have had trouble getting the sound to work right consistently. When I have Yast detect the chip it detects the right chip and even plays a crisp test wav, but after I confirm the settings the only app that plays sound right is xmms. In ever other application I hear large distorsions that make it sound like there is some type of conflict, but I can run xmms with multiple apps running and it never seems to skip. Does anybody have any idea what I may have done wrong?

Hmm... what sound card, what module/s are you using, and which desktop. Some people have odd conflicts between their Gnome desktop background sounds... and well, everything else.
