NVIDIA got me stuck in a land with no X.....commandline issues

After trying to install an NVIDIA card (7600GS) onto my ubuntu edgy 6.10 box, I was informed that the kernels were not in sync. So I try to apt-get update & am informed that "temprary failure resolving" address. I cannot even look at the full list files, as I cannot pause the display, nor scroll, & end up with only the bottom of the list. My firewall, guarddog, requires a gui to change settings, I have ping blocked & cannot change settings to disable this to test connection.

So...
1. How to see all of a list (ls) if it's bigger than the terminal screen?
2. How to change a firewall setting without its gui?

then I can start to address apt-get update.....
then find kernel info.....

To see the output of a command page by page, add this to the end of the command:
| less
(pipe less)
Anyway, if you have problems with your nvidia drivers, edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and replace 'nvidia' (in Device section) with 'nv', or 'vesa' if nv doesn't work) and launch startx.
