nvidia Geforce MX 4000

Hello,

Please excuse my bad english, I'll try to explain my problem best as I can.
I just bought nvidia Geforce MX 4000, it seemed kind of cheap, only 80$, plus it said on the box that it has linux support?, so what a heck, I went for it..

Well, after I booted to my Slackware 9.1, I went to XFree (xf86cfg -textmode) configuration and could not find nv Geforce MX 4000 on the list of the drivers. So I tried almost every single driver for Geforce MX cards that was on that list, but I got always same error: device does not exists for selected driver. So after that, I went to nvidia.com, downloaded latest driver pack for linux, installed it (it recompiled some parts of my kernel), and followed the instructions in README file, so I opened my XFree86 config file with text editor (pico ), and changed vendor to 'nvidia' instead of 'nv', but still I could not get into X beacuse there is no driver for my card.

Could anyone please explain to me how to get this card working with GNU/Linux distro (slackware in my case), so I don't have to change the card.

Any help appreciated

Sincerely, tmike

what you did should work.

Try reinstalling the driver and do exactly what the README says.

You will have to restart X when you have finished.

Does a NVIDIA splash screen come up when you start the computer. It should and if it does not it probably means the driver is not installed correctly

It's not working.

I tried almost every driver that there is in XFree list of drivers (xf86cfg -textmode), and I even tried to put manually driver name "GeForce MX 4000"

Here is full XFree86.0.log output

"Fatal server error:
no screens found"

This usually means that in /etc/X11/XF86Config file that you did not specify the driver to be used for all screens.

If you use vim in the file and search for "screen", it looks like this:

# **********************************************************************
# Screen sections
# **********************************************************************

# Any number of screen sections may be present. Each describes
# the configuration of a single screen. A single specific screen section
# may be specified from the X server command line with the "-screen"
# option.
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "FireGL 2"
Monitor "My Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24

You want to make sure that "Device" is equal to a section already built into your XF86Config file. Most time it is called
"nvidia" so you want to make sure you type "nvidia" in the "Device" section of "Screens" So if you search for "nvidia" it
should look something like this:

#
# nvidia
#
Section "Device"
Identifier "nvidia"
VendorName "nvidia"
Driver "nvidia"
# update this with the PCI id of your card. Consult the output
# of the 'lspci' command.
#BusID "PCI:1:5:0"
Option "Overlay" "on"
Option "CIOverlay" "on"
# Option "NvAGP" "1"
# Option "UBB" "off"
EndSection

Hope this helps.
