Nvidia Geforce 2 lag with Mandrake 9.2!
 

Just installed Mandrake 9.2 with KDE on my machine.
Not impressed by the performance though, apps starts
slow and theres an overall slow feeling.
X applications lag and leaves trails when I drag them
across the desktop! Its less choppy when I use blackbox,
than in KDE but still noticeable. Ive checked the running
processes and tried almost everything in the XFree86-config-4.


I installed the latest drivers for my nvidia Geforce 2 just
after installing Mandrake 9.2 so I dont know if the lag
was there with the mandrake drivers for my card.
Installing the drivers went fine and X starts without errors.

Glxgears performs about 1000fps (1280x1024). Is that good
or bad for a Geforce 2 (64mb) ?
Tuxracer starts and runs smoothly aswell.

Does anyone have a clue ?
Do I need to update to kernel 2.6 is there an easier way out?

Ive searched the forum but havent found any solutions that worked.
I like mandrake and blackbox very much and dont wont to go back to XP.

usually, the general speed of the computer depends on your hardware.
and since all u told us was u had a ge-force 2 (which has nothing to do with non openGL X applications) and you didnt post any other specs, how are we meant to know wether linux is funning a good speed.

anyway....
shutdown all services you aint using.
things like sshd startup by default.

To start off I'm a linux noob, been using it about a week!

First off (pure speculation)
Mandrake 9.2 is a dist for the newer linux user. meaning ez to use. The ease of use comes at a cost of slower performance. I also drake9.2 with Radeon 9000 xp2500+ 512mb DDR3200 and starting up apps is sorta laggy.

I have recently attempted updating my vcard to GeForceFx5200. It ran ok on windows xp however it was crap on Linux :-/ so my guess is a problem with Nvidia. which I believe is possible since both my onboard sound card and eth card are both nvidia2 and neither work...Supposedly you simply need to get the updated drivers from nvidia's site and update your kernel. Didn't work for me, but I've seen it on many forums and also the nvidia site.

Through my change over to Linux I've tried Slackware 9, Debian 3.2, Red Hat 9, and Mandrake 9.2. and Mandrake is VERY slow in comparison to the rest. I would suggest switching to Red Hat 9, which is also quite easy to use and almost everything was practically instantaneous on my machine.

i guess it must be decent considering i can't output anymore than 875fps also at 1280x1024, on my GF4 MX440 64mb :confused:
and the few games i have used on my box including counter-strike and soldier of fortune2 to name a couple run perfectly fine ..

I don't know that Mandrake is really all that much slower compared to other distros. I've had Mandrake 9.1 running on both a PII350 and an AthlonXP 2000+ -- on neither system could I complain of poor performance.

Although, having just upgraded to Mandrake 10.0 Community, I've had a few performance issues (I've opened a thread about it, with no luck so far.) My GeForce FX 5200 is running 1/3 to 1/2 the speed as it ran in Mandrake 9.2, and my sound is spluttery when opening big apps like OpenOffice (that never happened in 9.2) Is it because of kernel 2.6? Is it due to drivers? Or is it just that Mandrake 10.0 Community is really just an extended beta? Dunno.

IMO, performance under Linux depends so much on drivers and system setups that your current rig might run better on other distros with different setups. Hence, you'll see better performance under some distros.

By the way fEcAlMaTteR: my GeForce FX 5200 ran sweet through Mandrake 9.2. Just make sure you use the older NVIDIA drivers, beta 4496. Pity the same isn't true for MDK 10.0:(

im using the latest nvidia drivers on a federa core 1.
2.4 kenrel
1.3 ghz proc
512 meg ram 266hz

and i get 2000 frames per second with glxgears.
sounds like you have not correctly instaled the nvdia drivers, the generic nvidia drivers suck !

i get about 2100 frames per second out of my custom 2.6 kernel too.

UT 40 fps 60fps
UT2003 25fps 40fps

I have updated the NVIDIA with drivers found on the N. driver page - both sound (onboard, ASUS mainboard) and graphics... but Tuxracer still chops in the graphics as hell, and if I listen to music, it chops everytime I open a new Mozilla window.
With 1800MHz, 512 MB RAM, 64 MB GForce 4, I don't really get it. Am wondering if it has something to do with onboard sound. I am running Mandy 9.1.

What drivers are you using? Try the older 4496 drivers if you haven't already.

If that doesn't work, could you please post your approximate fps output from glxgears and the output of glxinfo.

(Just type either "glxgear" and "glxinfo" in a console. Cut n paste the results.)

How did you get the NVIDIA driver to work? The standard Mandrake 9.2 FX driver does not work for my FX5200 video card. I tried downloading 4496 from NVIDIA, but I do not understand how to install it. Just running it reveals a kernel dependency that I don't know how to deal with. Any suggestions for an ignorant Mandrake 9.2 user?
