Nvidia fx5600 problems.

Well as title says..

Few questions i need answered.. ok.. i set up xorg file and i can get video.. the problem is i can only get it to work using the Generic Nvidia Drivers.

So.. now i figure ok i'll go to nvidia install their driver. Obviously its not that easy.. its linux.

So i unpack their driver.. get accept the license next thing i know .. then it errors not saying anything just stops working and installation doesn't work. I'm not in "X" while trying this... and other than that i don't know what to do.

Well.. first question.. what exactly is the xorg file that i edit to make my mouse and all that good stuff work? I mean becuase of it i can use this computer and all.. but the video card isn't working how it should and it ghosts boxes insanely horrible.

I guess the other is.. how do i actually install this driver.. Do i need to unpack it.. somehow build it into the kernel?

As you can see i don't just need to be shown how to do it.. but i need some explanation on what i'm doing and why .. learning is better than just doing it a few times.

Please someone out there help this newb out.. this computer is a constant headache and my learning experience is a slow one but i seem to be making progress.

Hi Johanthegnarler,

Quote:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

This the X config file, X gets a lot of its setting infomation from here. Theres a peice of info in here that tells X what driver it should load, thats why inportant for the nVidia install.

Simply follow the README file that came with the nVidia driver.

Okay so it crashed? well where, what kind of text was on the screen as it crashed? With out the info i can only have a guess. My guess would be that you have not installed the Kernel sources, you need these because nVidia has to compile a new driver from scratch. Try urpmi kernel-source, make sure you install the correct source, it HAS to be the SAME version as the kernel.

to install the actuly driver, remember where the driver is located, and run init 3 from the terminal, this will close X, then CD into the directory where the nvidia.bin file is located and type 'sh nvidia-version.bin'

Ok. Well i'm using slackware 10, i recompiled kernel with newest source.. 2.6.10? i believe.. its working now and great.. So i went to install my driver.. and this is the error i get

First error tells me an Nvidia kernel module 'nvidia' appears to already be loaded in your kernel.

I'm not in X, the next thing it says make sure i have suport for module unloading..( I dunno about this part ) then it says the other is nvidia kernel module usage count could be corrupted and to restart..

So thats really where i'm stuck , i'm googling away and of course i can't find anything usefull.
