Nvidia driver probs

I have an nvidia Geforce FX ive followed all the driver installation instrusctions i have been given yet my computer still dosnt show the nvidia logo when i run "startx" and it says my glx extention is missing when i try to run "glxgears" but ive gone through my xorg.conf file and made sure it was there and uncommented. This is frusterating

if anyone is exprienced with Slackware plz help

Malacus 04-02-2005 02:03 PM

If anyone can help me im all ears(or eyes) ;)

dropwise 04-03-2005 03:52 AM

I have the same problem.

I have searched all of the relevant literature and forums, but nothing has fixed my problem so far.

Recently I reinstalled Slackware 10.1, then recompiled to 2.6.10 (a couple of times....)

I haven't been able to successfully load X (gnome) with the 'nvidia' driver in my xorg.conf
when I startx, it wont load and tells me no screens found and ultimately no devices found

Below I am pasting my (NONfunctional) xorg.conf file....

(BTW, when I ran xorgconf I guessed at some parameters.....)

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

learnmelinux 04-03-2005 04:22 AM

i dont use slackware so i might be way off base here, but when i installed the nvidia drivers i found that the system was not loading the nvidia module at startup, what i had to do was add "nvidia" to /etc/modprobe.preload so that the module would load, then everything was fine and the splash screen came up when X loaded. hope this helps, good luck.

dropwise 04-03-2005 01:16 PM

Well,

I don't have /etc/modprobe.preload.

The output from ls /etc/mod* is the following

/etc/modprobe.conf /etc/modules.conf

Any other suggestions?

thx

d

evil_empire 04-03-2005 04:34 PM

dropwise,
run "modinfo nvidia" and post the output here.
your xorg.conf contains two video device entries??! your first "vga" may be loading instead of "nvidia"
try commenting the first one.

malacus,
post your xorg.conf file here.

dropwise 04-03-2005 06:03 PM

It would seem that the nvidia module is not loaded.
modinfo nvidia returns : modinfo: could not find module nvidia

I'm not too sure why. I got the installation to work properly....

I commented out the first (VGA) device and no surprise it still does not work (which I am guessing has to do with the module loading).

Any clues as to how I can get the module to load?

thanks

d

learnmelinux 04-03-2005 10:22 PM

there are a couple of distos where the nvidia installer is unable to start the module automatically at boot time, mandrake is one of them and slack could be too. what you have to do is tell linux to load that module manually. i have no idea how to do it on slackware, but you might get more helpful responses in the slackware forum on this site. a temporary solution would be to load the module by hand by typing "modprobe nvidia" at a terminal and then "startx", as long as your xorg.conf has been edited properly it should work, this is what i did before i learned to edit my modprobe.preload.

dropwise 04-04-2005 12:36 AM

well, i've been trying a few things and haven't been successful yet.

when modprobe nvidia i return:

FATAL: Error inserting nvidia (/lib/modules/2.6.10/video/nvidia.ko): No such device

I'm kind of stuck as to what to do..... it is as though the module doesn't exist.(?)..

***EDIT***
I thought i'd post the dmesg after running modprobe nvidia:

nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
NVRM: No NVIDIA graphics adapter found!
NVRM: No NVIDIA graphics adapter found!

any other suggestions.....????

theMayor 04-04-2005 01:15 AM

I have somewhat of the same issue. I did everything all the tutorials I read said to do however I keep getting problems. For example by changing nv to nvidia my monitor literally turns off on my laptop. Also I don't have xorg.conf ... my equivelant is XF86Config-4 ... Does anybody have any ideas with a mandrake 10 distro using an nvidia geforce2go graphics card?

-thanks
theMayor

evil_empire 04-04-2005 07:22 AM

theMayor,
don't worry we will get your nvidia driver working.

dropwise,
now you have to start the installation from the scratch, rigght now I'm in a place with a lousy net, I'll get back to you after 4/5 hours.
for now ready these things,
latest nvidia linux driver from nvidias homepage
make sure you kernel source packages are installed

c ya later.

dropwise 04-04-2005 04:28 PM

i have downloaded the latest nvidia driver, and i'm pretty sure that I have the kernel source installed. I am wondering how I confirm that I do, though....

what is next, I have tried installing with

sh NVIDI* -k=2.6.10
and
sh NVIDI* --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux-2.6.10/
and they both seem to install correctly until the end
when it returns

Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This is most likely because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source files.
Then it suggests to try using --kernel-source-path (which I did....)

the output of /var/log/nvidia-installer.log is below:

'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel source
files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the

Now the

-> Kernel module load error: insmod: error inserting './usr/src/nv/nvidia.ko':
-1 No such device

is the same error i get when i try to load the module manually using insmod.

I really don't know what to do at this point...

Thanks in advance for the help..... :D

are you sure your kernel source matches your running kernel?

dropwise 04-04-2005 08:29 PM

yep. uname -a returns:
Linux dopamine 2.6.10 #1 Sat Apr 2 02:12:25 MST 2005 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux

learnmelinux 04-05-2005 06:54 AM

did any warnings pop up during the driver install, saying something like "your kernel has been compiled with support for XYZ which will conflict with the nvidia module"?
