And how can I check out this line?
I mean how can I check the root should point to which partition?

This is the lilo.conf file before modification:
Code:
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-20.9
	label=linux
	initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.20-20.9.img
	read-only
	append="hdd=ide-scsi root=LABEL=/"

other=/dev/hda1
	optional
	label=windows
Thanks a lot

responding to previous post, yes it should be:
> /boot/vmlinuz
#sorry

from your lilo.conf:
you can just use the same settings you had, and then just
change the image name:
example:
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=new
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.20-20.9.img
read-only
append="hdd=ide-scsi root=LABEL=/"

image=/boot/vmlinuz.old
label=backup
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.20-20.9.img
read-only
append="hdd=ide-scsi root=LABEL=/"

try it like that.
the root=hda1, it seems you have scsi, so the:
append="hdd=ide-scsi root=LABEL=/"

should solve that

When I try the exampl above, now it says:

ds: no socket drivers loaded!
VFS: cannot open root device "LABEL=/" or 00:00
please append a correct "root=" boot option
kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs or 00:00

Thanks a lot for your help as always!

after checking your lilo.conf, i think your vmlinuz had another name::

--------
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-20.9
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.20-20.9.img
read-only
append="hdd=ide-scsi root=LABEL=/"
----------

so just to make sure:: if you can do the following

mv /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-20.9 /boot/vmlinuz.old
mv /boot/System.map /boot/System.map.old

cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.22/System.map /boot/System.map
cat /usr/src/linux-2.4.22/arch/i386/boot/bzImage > /boot/vmlinuz

now in your lilo.conf:

image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=new
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.20-20.9.img
read-only
append="hdd=ide-scsi root=LABEL=/"

image=/boot/vmlinuz.old
label=backup
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.20-20.9.img
read-only
append="hdd=ide-scsi root=LABEL=/"

(note this is the same as previously stated)
now type::::

/sbin/lilo

reboot

hope this works, try it, come back...

When I tried what you said, it still gives me this error message:
Code:
VFS: cannot open root device "LABEL=/" or 00:00
please append a correct "root=" boot option
kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs or 00:00
Here is the files list in the boot directory:
