Nvidia Driver Install
Hey, guys complete linux n00b here. Trying to make a switch from windows...
Ok, Im trying to install a linux driver. I've already downloaded it from nvidia's site and am trying to install it. So i googled for some help and came accross this little guide: _home.bredband.no/gaulyk/linux/tutorial/nvidialinux.html How valid is this info? Is there any easier way? I am trying to install the driver going along the guides path... But I think it wants me to boot the computer up into the terminal. How can I do this? Thanks! |
first of all, the link you gave is not a valid link. to go into the terminal u just 1) press ctrl + alt + F1. After u do that u login as root by issuing this command:
2) su and then input u r root password. 3) type init 3 this will take u into basic mode 4) locate your nvidia file and just do sh nvidia_filename.sh (whatever the file name is) 5) make sure u have kernel source installed or else it wont work. There are a lot of threads on this topic.. search for them. Good luck and welcome to linux |
Follow the readme exactly. See the flames I recevied for not reading.

Thanks for that guys, btw the link does work , i just added the _ infront of it on purpose since a member with less then 5 posts cant not post links.
I didnt a quick search, but am embarsed to admit that I was unsuccessfull of finding someone mentioning it. The closest I could find was recomplying the kernal... But how can Install the linux kernal source... And I tryed installing it without the the source, but get an error about X server runing. Will that have to do anything with the kernal source code not being installed? And after I enter the terminal by pressing ctrl + alt + F1 as you said. How can I get back into the GUI? BTW, im runing redhat 9 Sorry for the questions but im a :newbie: |
what r u talking about?

You cant install it without kernel source installed and you will not get x server running message if u do init 3. I gave u step by step instructions. Anyway, there are numerous threads about how to install nvidia drivers. For example, http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ticle&artid=30 |
Have a look at the link that I supplied. It was a simple and painless install even to get the open gl drivers working for gaming and cad stuff. Just have a look at the readme file with the package and follow it to the letter. Generally, you will have to restart X

You did not give me insturctions Jatt_thugz, you told me what to do.
SIMPLE QUESTION: After you press ctrl+alt+f1 to get into the terminal, what do you do to get out of it? |
Are instructions any different than telling someone what to do? :D
ctrl+alt+F7 should get u back out if i remember correctly. so, did u install the drivers yet or what? |
Yes. Thank you.
I got the Nvidia logo, so its successfull. 1 driver down, 2 more to go (I think) :) |
