nvidia and random freezes
 

I recently installed RH8.0 on another one of my systems, and now I am having problems with it.

I started with a fresh rh8.0 install. I installed a kernel upgrade to 2.4.18-18.8.0, and then the video drivers for that version. I followed the same install proceedure for this computer as another system that IS WORKING, although when i start xwindows, the computer gets to the display, then after some activity (not on it's own), it freezes (hard). It does not take any 3d accel to get it to freeze, but it does take a button click or a window resize in order to do it.

When i 'modprobe nvidia' i get a message about the module starting with warnings... i am not sure how to check them.

I read about that parameter, but i am not running an AMD system.

I am running dual celeron 466 processors. The computer ran stable under older versions of linux (6.x,7.0,7.2), as well as windows2k. I am thinking that there might be a problem with the soundcore.... It seems that the system freezes at random times, but I can always get it do it by playing a sound.

It should be noted, that my mainboard has a yamaha sound card built in, but it does not seem to be detected by anything other than the 'checking new hardware' step of boot. I have installed an ess soundcard for use in linux.

Try turning off the built in audio off in your bios.

Have you disabled plug and pray? You could have an irq/port conflict.

cat /proc/pci

Examine that for conflicts.

The board is so old that the audio is controlled by a jumper, so I will check that out tonight. As for the pnp, do you mean disable pnp in the bios?

I will check the /proc/pci when i get home.
