Nvidia 4191 drivers on Dell 8100... Help!

Ok, I just installed RH8 last night, and the resolution was fine until i rebooted this morning. Was 1024x768, and is now 640x480. No big deal, i read somewhere that you needed the nvidia drivers from their website to run on Dell laptops anyways. I downloaded and ran the kernal rpm, and the driver rpm. Installation went fine, but when i rebooted, i couldnt load into X. logging in as root in text mode (or whatever command line mode it is that starts up when you boot), and typing startx gives me 1/2 page error message including this:
----------
Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved!

Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is unresolved!
(II) [GLX]: Initializing GLX extension

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 4. Server aborting
'blah blah blah, when reporting use this log file, and
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
----------
I cant believe i did this, but i trashed the two rpm's after i installed them (hey, i thought it was going to work... oh well). Is there anything i can do to get X up and running again? Thanks in advance for your help.

Read this post, and follow the instructions of membrax letter for letter. Cut and paste if you can...I tried wrestling with those drivers for weeks until I found this..now the're beauty.
