You can edit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to change from kde to gnome.

been there, done that - i stopped getting the graphical login at exactly the same moment that i updated the nvidia drivers, btw

Well, IMO, if your using the nvidia drivers it's better to login to the console and run startx anyway.

i guess that's what i'm going to have to do then

btw - do you know what i'm supposed to edit in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to get it to start with gnome instead of kde??

Change the last line from 'skartkde' to 'exec gnome-session'.
I think RH also has an app called 'switchdesk', you might want to check that out.
