nvidia 3D drivers


Q:i have installed nvidia 3D drivers using software manger.They are downloaded but my linux is not using them.when i done it using comand line display is crashed .then i have to install whole linux again.
i have also installed the drivers directly from web and followed the steps given on that website:
>ctrl+alt+F1
>stp the gdb
>sh name
>start gdb
>restart
it is not working????
my comp's specigications
4,no graphic card,1 gb ram;
what should i do now ,i have to install my linux 4 times bcoz of this driver problem;

A:System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers

not working;
but there is a thing called nvidia x-server settings
after opening it it gives a message " You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. "
what to do now
????????

try
CTRL-ALT-F1
su - (Enter root password)
telinit 3
sh name (run the NVIDIA driver installer)
reboot

You have to install the driver in runlevel 3 (this is what telinit 3) does.

Allow the installer to change your xorg.conf.
