Numerous Media Players fail to do so
 

My favorite internet music source streams in MP3 for which I have tried Real Player, MPlayer, VLC media player, Rhythmbox Music Player and a few others. This evening the Xine extra plugins mp3 codecs failed to install.
At another site I tried to follow the "all media variants" code instructions via terminal and indeed it was terminal, dying an ugly death whilst telling me that no such commands where found.
I have read some documentation for Gutsy, and have done a fair amount of searching for reasonable solutions.
If anyone can illuminate an installation path for a media player that doesn't require code to operate and that doesn't require building the application I would be very grateful.
"Nothing this hard should be considered free" but that's only for today.

Hmmm... I don't know. I don't play a lot of mp3 streams, but I think the mplayer plugin handles it for me - it loads, and then you have to click "play" yourself, but you can probably change that.
For webradio and such Rhythmbox has always worked.
What kind of a stream is it? a regular m3u file that you open with the player?
Post the link to the site, so we see what the problem is.

you mentioned 'gusty' so im assuming that your on ubuntu...

i use this for all my codec needs

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Hi thanks for you replies. Below is a link to Live365, sorry I am unable make the link live.
I ran the sudo apt-get suggested in terminal (yet a somewhat strange & mystical place with it's second language) which returned that it(restricted repository?) had been installed and it (the code?) was no longer needed.

I downloaded the play.pls file from one of the stations.
I could open it with Kaffeine (default KDE media player)
VLC and Amarok.

mplayer didn't open it, that surprised me a bit.

Could you check if you can play mp3 files in general?

Hello OSKAR. Nope, MP3 nor any other will play ... all are followed with the error message that codecs/demux are not available. I've decided to upgrade to 8.04 which will give me a fresh start. Thanks for your help. Hopefully the disk will be here soon

NO! OMG - stick with gutsy!

Hardy is the biggest public beta test since Windows Vista. Wait a couple of months.

All you need to do is to install the 'restricted-extras' package
What might have been your problem the first time around - it's possible that you need to manually add the universe repository.

Open:
system-administration-synaptic
Go to Settings - Repositories. Make sure that the 'Universe' or 'community maintained' repository is activated. Save and click reload.

and install the restricted-extras package

That should cover all your codec needs.

I've never gotten "live365" to work since they turned it into a membership thing. Haven't tried very hard tho. I have never had a problem with regular radio stations, tho. Try http://www.wumb.org/listenlive/wumbfast.pls

Of course if Ubuntu is not able to auto-install the nonfree codecs they are so proud of, that's another issue.

The restricted-extras package has been present/enabled for some time. Regarding Hardy my understanding was/is that the full release - as opposed to the beta and/or release candidate - happened in April just passed. Jeezzz, more rereading.

Regarding the www.wumb link the xine plugin opens full screen proclaiming that playback has started ... then buffering sticks at 6%. Somethin's missin',

Note: Synaptic manager informs me that 23,148 packages are listed with 1238 presently installed on this system. People love options and I'm no exception. Gee, I can review 900 a month and be done before my birthday next year... provided my learning curve improves.

Correct. I wasn't referring to the official status but to the general user experience. I experienced about a dozen known and confirmed bugs. Three of them were unsolvable as of three days ago and pretty much broke my system.
If you haven't updated already I would strongly suggest that you stick with Gutsy. Nothing has changed regarding the mulitmedia plugins.


I don't understand why you're opening it with xine. gstreamer is the default in ubuntu, and it has worked well in my experience. Could you double-check if you have the ubuntu-restricted-extras installed. Also check if it correctly installed gstreamer-plugins good, bad and ugly. That is all you should need.

I'm happy to report that Hardy 8.04 played live365 on first boot up via Totem. The upgrade distribution was a model of ease. I retired to bed leaving the installation unattended and when I woke the puppy was waiting for my password.
The only bug that I have experienced - if it is even that - is when cutting an item from a web page for paste into openoffice a data recovery function will close before displaying the cut item. I haven't explored the help files (or reported bugs) on this yet, but it maybe related to moving data between desktops, or possibly the cut item carries proprietary code.
Today I hope to install XP on a second hard drive, but frankly I'm so comfortable with Hardy I can't remember why. I apologize for it taking so long to return to this forum.

Hardy H installs totem+mplayer automatic
 

Totem frontend is streaming MP3 -and anything else with mplayer providing visualizations and video - here's all I know about mmxs <http://www.xmms.org/> Everything worked immediately following installation of Hardy H.

I misspoke in my previous post, so as not to lead anyone astray mplayer is not involved in the excellent streaming I have been experiencing since installation of distribution 8.04 LTS Hardy Herron. Hardy fully resolved the media player issues I had with Gutsy.
