Nu Bee loading LInux
Please be patient with me. I have been a windows user for some time and have become acustomed for and easy OS.
I am just now getting around to loading linux on a PC and here are my adventures so far. Installing SUSE Nome and it begins to check the hardware etc and then it gets to creating x configuration and waits a while then blue and green striped lines on the monitor start to blink. I let it sit for around 30 minutes and nothing. Rebooted and did it again. Not sure what is happening. |
Sounds like a graphics driver issue. What version of Suse and where did you get it?
Some info on the PC, especially video board would be helpful. I don't use Suse, but Ctrl-Alt-F1 might bring up a text-based TTY terminal window that would allow you to maybe try manually configuring the X window system. |
I am trying to load Suse 11.1 Gnome on a Dell and not sure where I got it. I would have to look up the information to see about the video card.
When would I use the Ctrl-Alt-F1? |
After it appears to stop booting up.

but you beter know how to edit /etc/x11/xorg.config by hand with vi or simaler! |
dont see an answer on the video card yet.. but it's been my experience that linux and nvidia are very good bedfellows. The cheapest ones can be had for $20-30 and is well worth it to retain your sanity.

If you can get to the command line, sax (sax2) often sorts it out, but not always. just for emphasis, for specific advice you will have to post details of your video card. |
@Admiral Beotch
If you still have access to your windows you can find the graphics card by clicking on start>programs>accessories>system tools>system information. |
I am sorry I have not gotten back to post. The computer is at my office and I have not been back. will post when I get a chance. Is there a link somewhere of how to install this? I understand there will be a big learning curve for me but I am interested in getting this going.
Thanks for all the responces. |

Make sure that your SuSE install media are ok by using the check media option. This does take a time... if that is fine, you shouldn't need new SuSE media. You should already have sax2 installed, so presumably you don't mean that. If nothing else works, if you can post /etc/x11/xorg.config then maybe someone can give you some advice from that. |
ok I put a different hdd in and found an nvidia video card (the dell has an integraded vid card and not sure what kind)
I did an ctrl alt and a bunch of f keys and the text came up. Earlier when I tried to install the SUSE screen would come up and a little white progress bar would come out and then nothing. It appears to be stuck on configuring devices. I will let it run all night and see what happens. Any ideas. |
Oh btw I did check the media and there was a md5 sum wrong error that came up. it looks like a memory error. I can try to re download as well to see if I can get a good image.

I downloaded another copy of SUSE KDE this time at http://software.opensuse.org/ and received the saem error when checking media.
As I was loading this one I got an "unable to handle kernal paging request at ffffb320" error. It seems to be a different error. Any ideas? Thanks, |
