ntpdate[17828]: no server suitable for synchronization found

Hi,

I know that this topic is in Google, but i've tried a lot of time, and i can't find a way to solve it; this is my scenario:

192.168.1.228: NTP Server
192.168.1.231: NTP Client

This is my /etc/ntp.conf configuration in NTP Server:

Code:
driftfile /var/lib/ntp/drift
restrict default ignore
restrict default kod nomodify notrap nopeer noquery
restrict -6 default kod nomodify notrap nopeer noquery
restrict 127.0.0.1
restrict -6 ::1
restrict 192.168.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0 nomodify notrap
server  127.127.1.0     # local clock
server voice.danntel.net
fudge   127.127.1.0 stratum 10
includefile /etc/ntp/crypto/pw
keys /etc/ntp/keys
I'm trying to configure this machine as NTP server without the need to synch with external servers (internet connection is intermittent); so, from client machine, i'm always having the following error:

Code:
[root@xa001001 root]# ntpdate 192.168.1.228
 7 Aug 20:04:14 ntpdate[17828]: no server suitable for synchronization found
There's no firewall between machines, both are virtual machines of ESXi Server

Any ideas please?

Thanks

[QUOTE=danndp;5005222]Hi,

I know that this topic is in Google, but i've tried a lot of time, and i can't find a way to solve it; this is my scenario:

192.168.1.228: NTP Server
192.168.1.231: NTP Client

This is my /etc/ntp.conf configuration in NTP Server:

Code:
driftfile /var/lib/ntp/drift
restrict default ignore
restrict default kod nomodify notrap nopeer noquery
restrict -6 default kod nomodify notrap nopeer noquery
restrict 127.0.0.1
restrict -6 ::1
restrict 192.168.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0 nomodify notrap
server  127.127.1.0     # local clock
server voice.danntel.net
fudge   127.127.1.0 stratum 10
includefile /etc/ntp/crypto/pw
keys /etc/ntp/keys
I've chanched the configuration, like the following:

Code:
driftfile /var/lib/ntp/drift
restrict default ignore
restrict default kod nomodify notrap nopeer noquery
restrict -6 default kod nomodify notrap nopeer noquery
restrict 127.0.0.1
restrict -6 ::1
#restrict 192.168.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0 nomodify notrap
server  127.127.1.0     # local clock
fudge   127.127.1.0 stratum 9
includefile /etc/ntp/crypto/pw
keys /etc/ntp/keys
What i want is that this server works as NTP server without having to synch with external servers; but still having the same problem from clients:

Code:
 7 Aug 20:47:02 ntpdate[18430]: no server suitable for synchronization found

Hope you can help

Have you stopped ntp before running ntpdate?

Try this on the client

Run date, make a note of the time

/etc/init.d/ntp stop
ntpdate 192.168.1.228
/etc/init.d/ntp start

Run date again, and it should have updated.

Is voice.danntel.net an external or internal time server? If internal is it another VM?
If it is external and you are having intermittent internet connections then the server will fall back to its internal clock which will not be very accurate and therefore a "no server suitable for synchronization found" would be expected. In addition a client will not sync to server with a stratum level greater then 5 I believe if my memory is still somewhat intact.

Here is some interesting reading about keeping time with VMs.
http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/tech...alMachines.pdf
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/mic...rnalId=1006427

With an intermittent internet connection a standalone NTP time server using a GPS receiver would be a simple solution.
