ntp restrict question
 

Hello,

We are running redhat and there is a ntp.conf line called.

restrict -6 ::1

Do you guys know what it means?

Without doing any significant research, I'm going to suggest/guess that it means "restrict localhost" in the IPv6 addressing scheme. This would be comparable to the IPv4 statement "restrict 127.0.0.1" except it is for IPv6.

As to what the "restrict" option means and does, check the man page for ntpd or ntp.conf (though I realize the ntp man pages last time I used them, left much to be desired. You will perhaps have better success using Google to search for sample ntp.conf files and adjusting one to your needs; that's what I did after giving up trying to use the man page advice to create my own file)

Thanks a lot. The problem is few servers are working fine. One of the box had 5 minutes time delay and when I looked others servers it had restrict -6 ::1 entery, but the one has problem doesn't ahve this entery. Do you think that would give the problem?

Based on what you write, and assuming that ALL the machines are operating on the same addressing scheme (either all IPv6, or all IPv4, or all BOTH) then I would think that this entry is not the cause of the problem.
