Moved: This thread is more suitable in linux-newbie and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

Have you tried using google?

Basically ntfs-3g is the driver (and ftype used to mount a ntfs partition) and ntfsprogs are a collection of utilities to manipulate the filesystem.

then why is there conflict?
google returned this: "..the ntfs-3g package currently conflicts/replaces/provides ntfsprogs."
so they are not so 'independent'.

and it seems to be debian bug, so I believe debian sub forum was the right place.

Based on the amount of information provided in your first post ntfs-3g and ntfsprogs are not the same thing and independent of the distribution.

The developers of ntfsprogs and ntfs-3g have merged and so the bug report from what I can conclude was how to setup the packages. The latest ntfsprogs use fuse and AFAIK compatable with ntfs-3g.
