Use the printer wizard included in KDE

Control Center -> Peripherals -> Printers

Well, the cups daemon needs to be running. Try running cupsd and try to connect again.

I don't know anything about Vector but a good newbie friendly distro should take care of stuff like that.

Does Vector have any kind of package management?

yes, it has - GSLAPT.
i tryed to get CUPS with it, but after i pressed UPDATE PACKAGE CACHE, i had no CUPS in that package list any more
don`t know if that GSLAPT works fine, because it shows that i have no Firefox installed, but i`m using it at the moment. and it shows some other stuff that i don`t have them, but i know i have!!

about PRINTER:
i can get CUPS run through VASM System Configuration, i didn`t try if i can do it as user (non-root) because i have problems with stuff that i want to print!!!!!!!!!! isn`t it nice ?!
I`m using Abiword, so,
1) i write just text in english - it prints - YEAH!
2) i make table - it doesn`t print - i look on CUPS - JOB IS ABORTED!!
i did that all as root.
maybe i should make table with my pen after i get printed text, or maybe i need to go to a friend who has Windows to print my tables ??
what wrong, is it CUPS, abiword, ????????????

You should consider using a different distro. Maybe Ubuntu, or Mandrake, because unless your printer is very exotic, a decent distro should take care of it.

As for the printer, you need to make sure cupsd is running, then go to Mozilla and open this url:
http://localhost:631
Use your root username and password. Click Add printer. Follow the wizard.
As for your MP3 player, depends on the model. A lot of them though, simply mount as an external storage device. In that case, simply do this:
Code:
mount /dev/sd* /mount/point -t vfat
/dev/sd* = you mp3 player
/mount/point = whewre you want it mounted
-t vfat = vfat filesystem (what most usb flash drives use)

Post this information please. The same for your scanner and the other stuff...

i yesterday changed Vector Linux to SuSe 9.2. and .......
what can go wrong???
so, there is KDE, i opened Printer Configurations and tried to add printer, it asks for USER NAME and PASSWORD, i typed, and it says that it wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!! how can this be???
i tried several times with root login and with user login, it says where are wrong!!!!!!!!!
i`m 100% sure i typed correctly (i did it several times)!!
Or maybe i need some other login (that is user name and password), i don`t know, maybe some extra printer-user-name and password or something???

print without X

hi, I have problems with my printer (Epson Stylus C42UX). I`m using Pocketlinux (based on Slackware) with KDE Light. In KDE Printel control options (using CUPS) it finds printer, i configured it, all seem to be ok. I`m trying to print something (or just test page), job is send to printer, but it doesn`t print!

Maybe I`ve got something wrong with CUPS, KDE printer options or with something else. So how can I print something (or just test printer) not using X. because maybe my printer is dead! i don`t know
thank you!

First of all, don't bounce your thread before 24 hours have
passed (also note that 0-reply threads get automatically bounced
twice, thus you LOWER its exposure by bouncing it).

As for the actual problem:

lpr -P<queue-name> <file>

It never occurred to me people might think X is a pre-
requisite for printing ;}

And since you're obviously using CUPS, check the
logs (/var/log/cups/ ) ...

Cheers,
Tink

P.S.: Just noticed that you already have a thread on
this topic going, I've merged them.
