Thanks for the feedback. I also since found out that Ubuntu was sending UTF8 but my terminal emulators were expecting ISO-8859. Changing to UTF8 solved the issue of funny characters in eg. Midnight Commander.

That leaves the issue of keystrokes (not being sent, not being sent as-is, not being what I'd like to use eg. CTRL-Home instead of ^ku). SecureCRT and Kitty (an enhanced version of Putty) let the user customize keys.
