notepad compatible text editor

i'm doing some web design work and i'm wondering if anyone can recommennd me a text editor that is compatible with notepad under Windows?

i really love gedit... it has the coloring effects and some tab feature that i love having in Editplus 3

the only problem is, tabs seems to be unrecognized by editplus/notepad...

any sugestions? cheers

I don't see how tab characters can't be recognised... it's ascii or it's not. you will find some inconsistencies between unix and dos text formatting though on line breaks and notepad can't handle unix formats, but opening in wordpad or spitting it through unix2dos will sort that out.

vi.
vi.
vi.
vi.
vi.

Examine the file gedit produced with "vi" (using :set list) and/or "od" to see
whether there are any "special characters" inserted. See what "file" has to say
about your text-files content.
