not so enlightened
 

ok, i must be dumb. i installed enlightenment (newest version) and ran it by using the gnome desktop switcher. now, i am stuck in enlightenment. i don't want to be enlightened anymore, i want to go back to gnome, but i can't. everytime i reset, enlightenment runs again. how do i switch back. i know about switchdesk etc. but i don't want to install anything i just want gnome back.

also, i have no left click options and i followed the FAQ, but it's still not there. please help.

Launch an editor (vim, emacs, nano, etc), and edit your .xinitrc file. Make sure you got following line:

exec gnome-session

not to be a pain or anything, but were is this file and what do you mean by edit? where do i type in "exec gnome-session"?

Can u get out of E? Just right-click somewhere on the desktop and select Exit or Quit or something similar (obviously u can see I don't use it :p).

The .xinitrc is in your homedir... if it's not there, then just create it. You will need to use ls -a to see it because it's a hidden file (starts with a period... note that).

i looked around some and found this thing:

DESKTOP="GNOME"

inside of /etc/sysconfig/desktop. gnome runs automatically when logged on as normal user, but when i run as root that is when enlightenment defaults. does this change what file i have to create or edit?

yeah, i can exit out of enlightenment, but it puts me back to the log in screen. if i log back in enlightenment starts again. i have no apps or anything in there (followed the manual even) - i can't even get online.

While in Enlightenment, try to open a terminal, console or shell (application where you get "mercutio@linux:~>" prompt). Type "gedit" to launch a gui gnome editor. Click the "Open" button, type .xinitrc (it's hidden, you might not see it) and finally click "Ok." Look at line where it begins with "exec" and replace it with "exec gnome-session"

sorry, but i cannot open a terminal. i have no left mouse click to apps. i have nothing but enlightenment eyecandy options.

(edit) i searched the root folder with ls -a and there is no .xin... file, so i guess this means i have to create it?

That's right, if you haven't the .xinitrc file, then you create one. But, make sure you have it, 'cause root usually has it.

i don't know what happened but when i got logged back on as root my left click otions worked. anyway, i opened a terminal and brought up switchdesk and got my gnome back.

i still would like to know how to be "in charge" of this .xinitrc file that i apparently don't have. do i need this for the future in case something like this happens again? where is the file that is storing this switchdesk setting anyway? can i use that?

i think u dont have the left-click (which is where u can exit enlightenment) is available to u, because u did not regenerate the menu when u first started E.
do a "ctrl-alt-end", and it will regenerate them. then ull have ur left click back. :)
