not recognizing my 'new' ubuntu8.1 disk when attempt to add program packages in gnome

so, figuring a few things out..won't give up. do like it so far, but the simple task of adding some program packages doesn't seem to be working out of add/remove, asking me to insert Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release i386 (20081030) which i believed to be the 8.1 desktop release i received with the laptop. doesn't recognize it. is this the wrong cd? what am i missing? -using gnome- thanks for any help..

Hi!

Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex" reached EOL (End of Life) on April 30 2010 as you can see here; https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases. That's why you can't install packages.

Here's a guide for EOL distros upgrade; https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades.

To configure your repositories (Software sources) you can open Synaptic Package Manager and do it from there (under Settings).

You may want to install the newest version of Ubuntu which is version 10.10 "Maveric Meerkant". You can get it here. All you need to do is burn the iso image to CD and boot from it.
