Not keeping internet connection for a while
Hello
I have got (UK) NTL Braodband via a cable modem, and although it works fine, every ~12hours or so I lose my connection. I have to reboot the cable modem and run a dhcp broadcast via Network Carc Configuration to get my connection back again... does anyone why, or have any suggestions? Not terribly inconvient right now but I can imagine this to be a problem sooner or later if I want to leave some stuff downloading overnight... I do plan on getting a router as soon as finances permit, but for now...??? Thank you!! Hong |
can you rule out the possibility of the fault being the ISP:s policy? Some ISP:s, especially cable ones, here in finland force a disconnection to renew your ip lease..

Hmm, its possible...but I dont thnk that is the case. I have had the same IP for about 3 months now, it gets changed normally about once every 4-5 months. I have been with them for 4 years, and this has only started happening when I moved over to Linux.
Thanks for the suggestion though. I appreciate it! Hong |
I'm gonna hook my lappy up to it (win2k) and see if it happens...if its still online by tonight I know its something to do with my linux rig...
Thanks |
A place to check out also could be the /var/log/syslog and /var/log/messages from the time of a disconnect.. There might b some helpful hints on the reason of the disc.

Yep, checked those just now and all seems ok...the logs only go back to about 22:00 last night and the net was def still on then. I mustve disc sometime between 00:00 and 07:30.
Thanks mate Hong |
