not able to ping proxy.xyz.com

hi all.......

I am getting my system ipaddress from dhcp but i have changed the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-etho file as

Device=eth0
IPADDR=172.17.70.250
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
BOOTPRO=static
ONBOOT=yes

and restarted the network

now ifconfig output shows i am connected to the network its showing ipaddress as 172.17.70.250....i am able to ping others ip address but not resolving names like ping proxy.xyz.com ..

even i added the nameservers manually to /etc/resolv.conf file why is this so.........I am doing all this to get static ip

Thanks in advance..........

What is your gateway IP address?
Can you ping your DNS server IP addresses?

When you have DHCP, which is the netmask, and which is the DNS?
When the netmask is 255.255.255.0 and your IP is 172.17.70.250 the you can't connect to 172.17.64.78 (DNS)
Or you change the IP from the DNS to 172.17.70.xx, or change the netmask to 255.255.0.0
