Not able to mount a partition after RHEL Upgrade from 5.5 to 5.8

Hi All,

I have done a P2V of a Redhat 5.5 server. After the migration the /opt partition of the server is becoming read only frequently. I have contacted the support and they suggested for an upgrade to 5.8. I had done that upgrade and now not able to mount the /opt partition. The error i am getting while mounting the partition is

==========
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda3,

missing codepage or other error
=========

Anyone please advise.

It sounds like you got bad advice. If the filesystem was already having issues before the upgrade it seems they should have suggested running an fsck on it rather than upgrading to later version.

Typically filesystems go to read only when there is an issue with them. The read only mode prevents writes so helps to prevent further corruption and gives you a chance to troubleshoot. The most common cause of issues is hardware problems. Is /dev/sda an internal hard disk? Internal hardware RAID? External RAID device over SAN? Have you checked to see if you have any log issues complaining about the underlying disk or controller? (dmesg, /var/log/messages, disk array logs etc...) Are there other partitions of /dev/sda that ARE mounting successfully with no issues?
