Not able to download thorugh YUM

I have installed Cent OS installed, but somehow i believe that i do not have all the packages. I know i can get it done by reinstalling the OS again with Complete install option. But i would like to configure YUM and get the packages downloaded.
When i try to download any package via yum, it throws the below error message:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
#yum update
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?releas...h=i386&repo=os error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (111, 'Connection refused')>
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base
#
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking for your valuable inputs
Thanks,
Vikyath

You could remove the fastest mirror plugin and revert to the default repos.

Lots of information on the Centos Wiki under package management.

If you are running through a local proxy there are a couple of extra hoops you have to jump through to get yum to work. A search of yum proxy on this sight should produce a lot of information.

It seems possible as the other guys said you cant resolve hostnames
ping google

also what you can try is check in /etc/yum.repos.d
and see if there is the following
CentOS-Media.repo
CentOS-Base.repo

otherwise re-add them
