i downloaded the drivers for my radeon 9600 today, and of course i can't install them.

when i try to run the rpm it starts to print a couple of files it needed but couldn't find on my hd.

my question: where are those files? (and how do i get them)

I remember when i was "using" mandrake i had a similar issue with the geforce2 gts, and all i did was search for those missing files in a rpm program, installed them and then it worked...

i don't think it's that easy on slackware but it would be nice if some nice non-newbie could give me a hint

You're trying to install drivers into Slackware with a .rpm file? Since Slackware isn't an RPM based distro, that is gonna cause some trouble.

Can we back up a bit and have you tell us what file you downloaded, the exact commands you used to try and install it and the error messages that popped up when it didn't go?

As an alternative, you can always try to download the Raedon 9000 source files (usually ends in a .tar.gz) and compile them yourself. Or there may be a Slackware package (.tgz) that is already compiled. Those can be installed using pkgtool or installpkg.

command: rpm -Uhv fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.5.i586.rpm


would it be possible to unpack the rpm and do a manual install?

Um, isn't that the rpm command to upgrage a package? I'm not sure what this will do if you don't have an installed package already.

Almost. Slackware has a command rpm2tgz that will convert an RPM into a Slackware tgz package. Once you've done that, you can install with the Slackware installpkg command. That might work better.

Finally, the files you listed in your first post come from some of the development packages. When you installed Slackware, did you do a full install? In particular, I think glibc is missing. It should be on your Slackware CD.

i did do a full install however, it's completely fresh now, is there anything i've missed (something above just installing the thing)?

it works!

i used the rpm2tgz to turn the file into tgz, then installpkg just like you said.
then i did the config thingy (the manual told me to) and that's it!
