Noob question: Installing Adeona?
 

Hello. Here I will test your patience.


As the subject states, I am having a problem installing Adeona. I will save you the trouble of wondering... yes... I am very much new to Linux(Ubuntu). Got sick of Windows, so I made the switch. I am aware I must learn on my own, but I could use some help getting started.


Ok, enough small talk.

Here are the directions I got:

"Make sure your computer has the following installed:

1. OpenSSL
2. traceroute
3. cron
4. iwconfig [optional]

Run the following commands,

1. tar xzf adeona-0.2.1.tar.gz
2. cd adeona/
3. ./configure
4. sudo make install
5. sudo crontab -e then add the crontab entry echo'd by the install script"


-scratches head- Man, wtf is all that? HaHa. Sorry.

Anywho. I did install all the above.. I think. Not so sure OpenSSL was installed correctly..

When I use the listed commands to install, I get :

"tar: adeona-0.2.1.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors"


Could anyone PLEASE explain to the noob how exactly to install this?

Again, I know using Linux requires some actual thought , as compared to Windows... but I could just use a leg-up here.

Did I miss something?

What linux distribution and what did you do exactly? The people around here who know more than I do seem to like to know where to start and that others have worked on that actual thought process you mentioned. They seem to take it as an article of good faith that all hands are pulling hard on their respective oars.

You did not mention that you in fact downloaded "adeona-0.2.1.tar.gz" and unpacked it. Your distros list of installed packages should include OpenSSL, and your "Find File/Folders"" application should see it if its there.

I'm not sure of half of what you just said,yes, I am THAT new to all this.

I did however, after bashing at my keys for a while in the terminal, figure it out. I can't believe I did, more so, I actually understood what I was doing. Haha.

Hey, everyone was noob at some point, right? I'll get the hang of all this, it'll just take summoning up patience I don't really have, or haven't mastered.

Oh, but I did download adeona, figured that would be obvious, seeing as how I asked about installing it.... heh.

Awe man. I ran into a speed bump, which I am of course working on fixing myself... but... could someone enlighten me as to what I could have done, or not done?


I got as far as :


"Run the following commands,

2. cd adeona/
3. ./configure <---Here

But then when I type in :
"# sudo make install"...


I get the following:

some time while installing RHEL 3. linux installed but no gui interface on that what should i do to get gui interface ?

and how to configure yum in rhel 3?

Ahem. lol. Hey, mate... you need to start your own thread. You're hijacking mine! =P

For some reason, Ubuntu divides its libraries into runtime and development versions. You need to install openssl-(whatever version number)-dev. That might sort out the problem.

Did you see this and is it helpful? http://adeona.cs.washington.edu/linuxinstallguide.html I ask the obvious because I often overlook it.

I can't believe I did it, seriously. I am that...wait.. already stated that.

thor: Yes, it pretty much held my hand throughout the process. However, being the noobian that I am, it may as well have been in greek!


The guide you mention does give good instruction, that is, if you are used to this type of stuff, which I am not.

Weird, I posted a comment saying I got the program set up, but it didn't go through.

Anyway, I did get it set up, after much frustration. Ah well, trial and error, right? Lesson learned.

I will def. be bookmarking this site, very helpful.

Well done. There several guides and howtos on linux, its terminology and structure, if you don't have to or want to educate yourself intensively through practice. All went so well that even the intruder got an answer.
