Noob - Embedded Linux
 

I have wireless bridge that is having some software issues. I ran nmap and figured out that it is running Linux.

Running: Linux 2.4.X

OS CPE: cpe:/o:linux:linux_kernel:2.4

OS details: Linux 2.4.9 - 2.4.18 (likely embedded)

It also has a webserver running GoAhead-Webs embedded httpd and only port 80 is open.

This is a stupid question and I don't know much about Linux, but is it possible to re-install linux on this bridge to get full access to the OS or is there a way to get access to the OS that is currently installed. I am just mucking around before getting rid of the device because it can't bridge any connections. I was hoping I could SSH in, but the port isn't open.

Just looking for some direction.

Please provide us with some more information about the device, like manufacturer/model.
Also you mention it being a bridge. Does this mean the device is ment to be used as an extender or can it also work as a wireless access point/router?
And if you gave us some information about the problems you have, forum members might be able to give you some tips.

As for your question about replacing the current version with some other distribution. This depends on what kind of device it is.

This is a IOGEAR WIFI Adapter. It is not a repeater but will bridge connections from a wireless to a ethernet cable. You can use it for devices that don't have wifi connectivity like the old Xbox. The device has other modes like the following

Gateway
Bridge
Wireless ISP: In this mode, all ethernet ports are bridged together and the wireless client will connect to ISP access point. The NAT is enabled and PCs in ethernet ports share the same IP to ISP through wireless LAN.

It has a ethernet and USB connectivity for power. My problem is that there is some software issue and I can't use it at all, does not bridge connections. When I log in the menu are .asp pages.

As I said earlier it runs Linux NET4.0 for Linux 2.4 and also has some sort of BusyBox installation running. I wanted to SSH into the device but couldn't, not sure if the port is open. Nmap says only port 80 is open.

My question is - Is there anything I can do with the device or should I just get rid of it!

You could check the dd-wrt database to see if you hardware will support that firmware distro:

If it does run on your hardware, it a good way of getting more out of it both in terms of performance and flexibility.

Thanks..Very familiar with DD-WRT and Tomato. Unfortunately, This is not a router and is not supported by dd-wrt/tomato.

How did you decide it has busybox?

I can log the logs from the device. It says it is running Busybox and GoAhead-Webs appserver. To me it looks like the app server does not let me open any port but port 80 that is open on device.

I am just trying to get the full console somehow and out of ideas on how I can do that. I can upload a "firmware" , it is possible to boot the device somehow??
