Hello. I am trying to avoid using X except when completely
necessary, and though vi seems to rule as an editor, that
24x80 characters (or whatever it is) has to go!

Where can I read about increasing command prompt real estate?
Just looking for a point in the right direction.

look at the lilo howto, use a framebuffer, and you can use a vast amount more space, as well as a lot of other cool things, like video and anything else without X.

"framebuffer" - aha, that was the word I had lost. yes, now it sounds familiar.
