No Wireless Connection with Suse 10 Desktop
 

Hello: I have just spent 3 days trying t configure an Evaluation copy of SUSE 10 Desktop. I loaded all 6 CD's. It boots up fine and I can connect to the internet ONLY with the Ethernet cable attached. I have a COMPAQ Presario V2000 Laptop with a Broadcom wireless card. I started trying to get this to work around 4PM and it is now almost 1AM. Now I understand why Windows is sooo popular. This laptop ran perfectly under XP now it is just !@#!@$
I am going to give it another day to try to work this out. ANY help will be greatly appreciated. I have wanted to use Linux for a long time and I finally got the nerve to do so. Sincerely JOE

Why use the trial version of Suse? There's OpenSuse. And Fedora. And Ubuntu. And tons of other free distros.

Also the reason I chose this Linux system was because I couldn't get Fedora 10 to load after I burned All of the CD's. Thank you guys very much for your time. I'll check back again before I go to bed. It's now 3:01am and I have now spent 11 straight hours trying to get the laptops wireless to find my network. It only works if I take the Ethernet cable out of the PC and plug it into the laptop. I tried to transfer my network settings through a USB drive but Linux can't read windows. Thank you again.

SLED 10 has been out for a while now and the support for wireless cards exists but is slightly convoluted for a new user such as yourself to set up. There is a small tutorial on how to set up a wireless card using the windows driver. You can find that tutorial at the link provided below but first you must download the windows driver for your card. You can do so by navigating to the section "Network" on the following link. Make sure you get the Broadcom driver.

Well last night I gave openSuse a try. Same problem. If I connect the ethernet cable then I can connect to the internet. It isn't reasonable though. I need to connect via wireless. I gave up on that and decided to reload windows to see what happened. The laptop works perfect. Took about 40 min. Then I downloaded Fedora 10. I loaded that up. Now I have the same issue. No wireless connection. Now at least I get a message. I don't know what it means though. Here is what it says: SeLinux is preventing consoletype (consoletype_t) "read" to/var/lib/dhclient-wlan0.leases (dhcpc_state_t).

I Have no idea what this means. I have printed all of the windows wireless settings. Where I can figure out the information to type in I fill it out. I really want to get Linux to work. Thank You Very much in advance.

You need to type it in the terminal. You could find it in Application > Accessories.

SE stands for security enhanced and seemingly there is a bug in Fedora's implementation of SE.

Currently the bug has been fixed and merged into the stable repo. You can nullify this bug simply by updating your Fedora distro. You can do so by having your laptop plugged in via ethernet and running the Fedora update software.

Seeing that you are a new user and you seem to be open to installing multiple distros let me give you a hint. When chosing a distro you must take the following into consideration. Now these are the most basic inital questions to ask of yourself.
1.Which has the most documentation.
2.Which has a substantial following so if I do have a problem that I can't solve on my own I can tap into that resource to solve my problem.
3.Which suits my needs for my intended use of my machine.
4.As a new linux user which distro seemingly is going to be easy for me to use.
5.What desktop environment suits me as a new user KDE or GNOME?

I think after doing a little research you will find that Ubuntu is most likely the answer in your case. Even though I use openSUSE I find that whenever I have a problem and Google the problem I find that Ubuntu forumn pops up first. This means to me that Ubuntu does have a huge following and typically posting a question related to your problem on their forumns will yield an answer quickly. I don't use Ubuntu myself because I have found that in my situation openSUSE operates faster when running mythtv which I suspect was caused by mysql. I also like how software updates are handled in openSUSE. ie one click installs of updated software via the openSUSE web site. Anyways, I would definitely try Ubuntu seeing that you have tried SLED 10 openSUSE and Fedora already without luck.

Oh, and when someone says list the output of a certain term they mean typing a command in a console. Simialar to going to START > RUN > CMD in windows.You'll find that in linux you will have to do this from time to time but once you get used to the commands then you find it is a powerful tool. Just remember to be patient. And also remember that all linux distros are not the same so when posting try not to bounce back and forth between distros.

Yes you DID IT!!!. I updated to Fedora 11 and low and behold, I saw the wireless light go on and I'm in business. I owe you!! Thanks SSSSSSSSsssoooooo much. Now I can get some sleep. Thanks to everyone. It is now wonder Linux is surviving and gaining.
