No Wireless Connection
 

I am new to Suse having just installed ver 11.1 on a new PC. Even got duel booting option and everything to work except for connecting to the wireless network.

I am using a Dlink W510 PCI adaptor. It works fine in windows but I cannot get it to work in Suse. I have searched where I think is best but have not found a solution. Many seemed to be offering a solution but the langauge and method detailed was beyond me.

Is there a simple method to get Suse connected as with windows (install the software, install the card, set up the connections SSID and away you go)

Please try to keep it simple at least until I get the hang of using the software.

Could you post the output of the following command please

lspci

Devie manufacturers change the chips used in devices making revision changes but not model number changes, lspci will show us what wireless chip is actually on your Dlink DWL-510 wireless card.

if it's the Realtek rtl8180 chip then This driver may work.
If it's an atheros chip that would be a different driver..

We need to see that output to direct you properly.

if you are looking for a simple method, try:
YaST Control Center->Network Devices->Network Settings

also, you can do "sudo /sbin/lspci" to see if the card is recognized by the kernel.

Still Stuck - no wireless
 

I now have a recognised wireless card, an ESSID and assurances from the software that the card is working fine

I have set all the preferences etc to match the windows one (the wireless system works fine in windows) but i still cannot connect to the interent. I have got the firewall working. The only bit that does not look good is that the wireless router does not indicate it has a connection to the computer when working with Suse. It does show a connection when working in windows

Anyone got any ideas please such as trouble shooting advice?

As far as I can tell, as the ESSID is displayed as an available connection in the wireless setup system, Suse recognises the card.

As for confirming it - as I have said I am a complete and utter novice at this and cannot get to the equivalent of the windows C prompt to run the programmes you have all suggested. I know there must be an easy way but....

It does not help that the Suse 11.1 I downloaded has US keyboard by default so I cannot get the correct symbols to appear in any case.

It took me 20 years from using DOS 1.2 to becaome any where near proficent with windows. I will persevere with Suse.

I have come across a number pof "Dummies Guides and will keep at it. All help still appreciated but as they say "keep it simple for stupied people"

I now have Suse connected to the internet vis my wireless broadband
