no Wifi on new Linux Mint installation

Hi!

I just installed Linux Mint 16 on a quite old notebook with integrated 802.11 b/g wireless lan. I am never prompted that wlans are found nor could I configure a wifi network. There was a Windows XP installation on the notebook before I installed Mint and the 02.11 b/g worked fine then.

Here is some output:

Code:
lspci
...
0a:05.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)
...
Code:
sudo iwlist 0a:05.0 scan
0a:05.0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
As I am all new to linux, I am hoping that someone here has any ideas as to how I will get that notebook connected to the Internet using wifi?

Thanks
Dani

Hi, welcome to LQ,

please execute the lspci command with the -k option (to show the kernel-module)
Code:
lspci -k | grep -iA3 broadcom
Probably the broadcom card needs additional firmware. As for the iwlist command you should try
Code:
iwlist wlan0 scan
and be sure that wlan0 is up. Also the iwconfig command will be useful once you connect to an accesspoint.

Hi Markus!

Thank you for your reply!

Code:
lspci -k | grep -iA3 broadcom
0a:05.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: AMBIT Microsystem Corp. TravelMate 2410
	Kernel driver in use: wl
0a:06.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Cardbus Controller
Code:
iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning
How do I make sure wlan0 is up?

Look
Code:
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
wget http://mirror2.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2
tar xf broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2
cd broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5/driver
sudo b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware wl_apsta_mimo.o
modprobe b43
Make sure you are connected to the internet with a wire from your router to your computer while you download the driver for your wireless
