no wifi -acer aspire 4730z-mepis 8
 

I have no wifi on my laptop. It is a new (2 months old) and has a media like button instead of a switch like most older laptops. I was having coffee this morning at the coffeehouse and tried to get online to no avail. I had downloaded kubuntu 9.04 for a friend and decided to test the cd to make it was ok and then i could connect!I have the feeling it is the button is the cause of the trouble because the volume media buttons do not work either but i can change the volume with kmix. But the wifi has me baffled.does anyone know how i might be able to fix this? Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance. please use laymans terms as i am a total newbie.

Please post the output of the following command so we can assist you.

lspci | grep -i wireless

You probably just need to install the proper driver for the wireless, or the wireless firmware files, but we can't tell you which ones untill we know what wireless chipset is in your laptop. (that's what the command above should tell us)

The wifi adapter is an atheros ar928x and the loaded module is ath9k. Another thing worth noting is that my volume media buttons do not work either so i adjust the volume with kmix . Thats why I think the media button for my wifi maybe causing my problem.My box is a dual boot with vista home premium but the button works for that and it worked with the kubuntu 9.04 live I burned for my friend.
